Edges of Slumber was written in 2006 for BCMG. It attempts to explore the states of the conscious and the unconscious. The piece opens with a quasi-improvised piano solo which continues throughout this section. The middle section is hypnotic with a certain Eastern feel to it. Edges of Slumber was runner up in the 2006 COMPASS prize.
Cel is a piece written specifically to be performed with one dancer. It was performed twice in the same concert by different performers. The first performance was choreographed by Anita Wadsworth, danced by Joanne Lyons and performed by Joas Cardoso. The second performance was choreographed and danced by Iisa Ilona Jantti and performed by Jo Keithley. The two performances were vastly different in concept, dance and sound. Wadsworth's choreography was based on Bergman's Scenes From A Marriage and created a stifling atmosphere between the cellist and dancer, whereas Jantti's choreography was centred around and imitated the movements made by the cellist.

Chromaticity was written for saxophone choir (12 players). It was written in the Autumn of 2008 and during this time I was inspired by the changing landscape of the city. Amongst the constant hustle and bustle of the urban environment, I was struck by the enormous variety of colour that could be seen in the natural landscape and particularly in the park. Trees changed colour daily, and the weather ranged from snow to beautiful warm sunshine.
This was first performed at Blackheath Halls in January 2009, conducted by Gerard McChrystal. Subsequently, I worked with a visual artist to create some projections to run with the recording. See a clip of this here. To find out more information regarding this piece, or to buy a copy of the score please contact mail@hannahvarty.com
